The Icelandic power plant operator Hitaveita Reykjavikur awarded Balcke-Dürr GmbH the contract to supply one turbine condenser for the Svartsengi-6 Geothermal Power Plant.
The value of this contract amounts to more than EUR 1.7 million. Utilizing geothermal steam available in Iceland, the new power plant unit will feed approx. 33 MWel into the Icelandic
power grid.
The geothermal steam that drives a turbo-generator set will be condensed in the Balcke-Dürr condenser and subsequently cooled in a cooling tower. The cooling tower will be supplied by SPX Cooling Technologies, a sister company of Balcke-Dürr.
The turbine condenser will be manufactured in the Neubeckum facility of Balcke-Dürr. It will
be made exclusively of stainless steel because it will be exposed to highly corrosive gases contained in the steam. The sixth unit of the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant, which is to
go on stream at the end of 2007, will take its steam from the same geothermal field as the famous "Blue Lagoon" spa.
The steam for the famous "Blue-Lagoon" Spa will soon also power
the sixth unit of the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant.
