Units 3 and 4 of the Icelandic power plant at the Hellisheidi site will be equipped with turbine condensers from Balcke-Dürr GmbH and cooling towers from its sister company SPX Cooling Technologies. This step was already carried out in Units 1 and 2. The contracts for the turnkey supply of the "Cold End" systems were signed after laying the foundation stone on 29 April 2006 in the presence of the Icelandic Prime Minister and the Mayor of Reykja¬vik. The contract value is approx. EUR 15 million.
The steam turbines will be delivered by the Japanese consortium partner Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, while the cooling towers will be constructed by SPX Cooling Technologies. In 2004, Balcke-Dürr already won the contract from the operating company Orkuveita Reykjavikur to supply, erect and commission the "Cold End" systems for Hellisheidi Units 1 and 2. An order to supply the turbine condenser of a plant unit generating 30 MWel followed in November 2005.
The new Power Plant Units 3 and 4 will be built on the second largest geothermal field located in the southwest of Iceland near the volcanically active region of the Mid-Atlantic Trench, about 30 km from the Icelandic capital Reykjavik. The new construction project represents the third extension stage of the geothermal power plant, which will provide approx. 110 megawatts of electric power and additionally heat for district heating purposes after its commissioning in the year 2008.
The additional power plant capacity being built in Iceland is the result of the increased energy demand from the aluminum industry. Further geothermal power plants are being planned.
