| Balcke-Dürr wins condenser and feedwater heater contract for a new 750 MW coal-fired power plant unit in Duisburg-Walsum, Germany |
| 2007-01-17 |
|
Balcke-Dürr GmbH will supply the turbine condenser
and the complete feedwater heater train for the new 750 MW unit of
STEAG Aktiensgesellschaft’s hard-coal-fired power plant in
Duisburg-Walsum. General constructor of this new power plant project is
Hitachi Power Europe.
In addition to the titanium-tubed turbine condensers and a total of 5
LP feedwater heaters, the scope of supply also includes 4 SNAKETM HP
feedwater heaters of the header type, which in contrast to common
practice will not be installed vertically but horizontally. The
components will be manufactured mainly at the Neubeckum facility of Balcke-Dürr .
On completion, the new generating unit in Duisburg-Walsum will have an
efficiency of 45 % and be the most modern hard-coal-fired power plant
in Germany. Construction starts in the year 2006/2007; commercial
operation is scheduled to begin in 2010.
This contract highlights once again the worldwide leading position of
Balcke-Dürr as a designer and manufacturer of feedwater heaters
featuring header technology. Previously, Balcke-Dürr secured the orders
for the new 950 MW and 1100 MW lignite-fired units of the Niederaussem
and Neurath power plants (BoA 1, 2, 3) respectively.
The feedwater heater design with headers, which has established itself
in German utility power plants, is capable of lasting up to 4 times
longer (up to 50 years) than conventional U-type heaters and is thus by
far the most cost-effective solution. It is not susceptible to load
fluctuations and allows therefore a flexible mode of operation of the
power plant. Thanks to these advantages, the header technology is
becoming increasingly interesting in countries outside Europe, for
example, for new construction projects in South Africa, South Korea,
and China.
